The Genesis Centre came alive with joy, culture, and community spirit as more than 600 seniors from diverse ethnic backgrounds gathered to celebrate Senior Week 2025. The event, led by the CRESS Centre in collaboration with 14 local organizations, honored the invaluable contributions of seniors to Calgary’s multicultural and inclusive community.
A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Social Inclusion, Multiculturalism, and Community Development Awards to 14 outstanding seniors and featuring their stories. These individuals were recognized for their dedication to fostering unity, cultural understanding, and active community engagement across generations.
Dr. Gopal Bhatta, the keynote speaker, delivered an inspiring address emphasizing the importance of recognizing seniors as pillars of community development. “Our seniors are not just witnesses to history—they are active builders of our present and future,” Dr. Bhatta stated. He also provided an overview of the program’s goals, which include promoting intergenerational dialogue and celebrating cultural diversity.
The event also featured remarks from Minister Mohammad Yassin, who praised the initiative for promoting diversity and multiculturalism. “Events like these are vital in showcasing the strength of our multicultural fabric and the essential role seniors play in shaping inclusive communities,” said Minister Yassin.
Starting with the Land Welcoming and cultural performance from the Indigenous community, the celebration included multicultural performances, storytelling, interactions, networking, and a community luncheon, creating a vibrant atmosphere of unity and appreciation.
Bishnu Bajgain, the Executive Director of the CRESS Centre, remarked that the event helped foster multiculturalism and promote intercultural and intergenerational learning. Sherry King, Executive Director of the Genesis Centre, expressed gratitude to all participating organizations and volunteers, noting that the event’s success reflects Calgary’s commitment to honoring its senior citizens and embracing cultural diversity.
